SOFTWARE

Softwares are a set of programs that work hand-in-hand with the hardware in order to achieve the aim of computing. In a nutshell, it is a program, which is designed to perform a well-defined function. A program is a sequence of instruction written to solve a particular problem.

 

Types of Software

Software is mainly divided into two categories which are;

  1. System Software
  2. Application Software
  • SYSTEM SOFTWARE

These are softwares that form the basis or background on the computer system before any other software can be installed. They are types of computer program that are designed to run computer hardware and application programs. In another word, they act as interface between the hardware and user applications. Examples are operating system such as:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • OS/2
  • Unix
  • DOS (Disk Operating System)

       

  • APPLICATION SOFTWARE

This is the kind of software that is designed for a specific purpose. Such software could be for typing, slide presentation, graphics designing and others. Examples of application softwares are:

  1. Mavis Beacon
  2. Microsoft Office
  3. Corel Graphic Suite
  4. Photoshop
  5. Adobe Reader etc.
